Millers Strength Coach Adds Muscle, Instills Grit

Noblesville High School has a winner in strength coach Brian Clarke, whose agenda is all about molding the Millers into winners.

A good place to start might just be in football.

Clarke, in his third year as Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, has a proven record. You can count the championships he’s been involved in on both hands – nine at Warren Central  and one (2003) in basketball at Pike.

His speed and strength training program had a major impact on Warren Central winning boys Class 5A football championships  in 2006 and 2007. The other championships came in girls and boys cross country and track.

Can that happen at Noblesville?

If not, it won’t be because of lack of personal pride and enthusiasm and unity and, of course, talent.  The program is making gains, and the help of a second middle school – scheduled to open for  the 2011-12 school year – will result in more talent and position competition for the program, Clarke contends.

Clarke said the kids are competing at  different  level this year.  For example, he pointed out that during his first year at Noblesville he did not see any big hits in football, but he saw four or five per game last year and he expects to see eight-to-12 more this season.

Clarke said the Miller football players are physically, mentally and emotionally stronger this year, and he thinks the team is among the top five programs in those areas. Continue reading

Olympic Gymnast Seeks Golden Touch In Business

Hard work has been a trademark of highly celebrated gymnast Jaycie Phelps.

Her success did not come easily. She took small steps before accelerating to the ultimate goal of being an Olympic gold medalist. She even had to make sacrifices, such as leaving her hometown of Greenfield, Ind., in 1991 for better training opportunities in Cincinnati.

Now, she’s preparing to take what could be an even bigger step into the world of business.

The Jaycie Phelps Athletic Center, located across from Mount Comfort Airport in McCordsville off Olio Road and Stoner Drive, is just about ready to make its debut. An open house is scheduled for Aug. 15. Jaycie’s the owner and team director along with her father, Jack Phelps, and David Marus.

You won’t have any trouble finding your way. There’s a huge “Jaycie Phelps Athletic Center’’ sign  posted on the southwest corner of Stoner Drive. And, of course, a petite, world-class athlete with a heart the size of a balance beam ready to greet you.

The 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist at the Atlanta Games can only hope her business proves to be as golden as her medal.

“Yes,’’ Jaycie said, when asked if she thought starting such a business would be more difficult than winning a gold medal. “In a different way, though, but it’s a lot like an Olympic challenge.’’

She said she’ll be involved in the Jaycie Phelps Athletic Center every day, not just in name only. Continue reading

Hello Hamilton County!

We’re happy to be here… We hope you are glad to see us…

We look forward to building a long-lasting relationship.

Hamilton County Sports Daily is dedicated to ALL sports  fans . . .  and we’re excited about making our maiden voyage.

It’s all about kids and those who teach, mentor and support them and help shape their lives, as well as the individual support given to schools and organizations and booster clubs. It’s all about what makes sports so special, from elementary to high school . . . something so clean and so pure.

Simply out, it’s all about events and activities, highlighting our student-athletes, coaches, youth programs.

Our main emphasis will be on Hamilton County High School varsity sports, sanctioned by the Indiana High School Athletic Association, featuring the Carmel Greyhounds, Fishers Tigers, Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles, Hamilton Heights Huskies, Hamilton Southeastern Royals, Noblesville Millers, Sheridan Blackhawks, University Trailblazers and Westfield Shamrocks.

We hope you look to the Hamilton County Sports Daily for features, results, up-to-date conference standings, photos … and, well, pretty much the activities you enjoy and want to read about.

As we grow, we hope to include amateur and professional golf and bowling and a plethora of other amateur sports. And just like our high schools, youth programs such as the Carmel Dad’s Cub, Southeastern’s School District S.P.O.R.T.S. and the Noblesville Boys and Girls Club – and, of course, our vast growing swim clubs – also will be just a click away.
