One thing you have to say about Guerin Catholic is the Lady Golden Eagles certainly have a lot of heart.

Earlier this season, they battled defending state champion Cathedral to a tie. Unfortunately, the rematch in the state finals did not come about. Both lost semifinal matches.

Coach Jonathan McClure’s Lady Golden Eagles, the smallest school in the state championship field at Kuntz Memorial Stadium, fell to Columbus North 2-1 in two overtimes, and Cathedral lost 1-0 to South Bend St. Joseph’s.

Guerin Catholic, which won the school’s first girls soccer championship this season, ended the season with an 18-4-1 record. The Lady Golden Eagles returns a strong nucleus next season, led by team scoring leader Kristen Broadbent. Both Broadbent and senior Vanetta Poppas won’t have much time to catch their breath. They’re also members of first-year coach Scott Miller’s girls basketball team.
