Third-ranked Hamilton Southeastern made winning the Carmel Track and Field Sectional look relatively easy on Thursday evening.

Carmel senior Langston Newton won the discus in a sectional record distance of 188-01, and also won the shot put at 57-04.25.
While the Royals won seven events and scored 175 points, No. 4 Carmel was the runner-up with 124 points, and Fishers and Noblesville were third and fourth with 78 and 51 points, respectively.
It was revenge of sorts for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference champion Royals, who were runners-up to the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference champion Greyhounds in the Hamilton County meet.
They’ll take their personal battle to Lafayette Jeff for the May 24 regional, where berths in the June 2 state finals will be on the line.
Four sectional records were set, three by Hamilton Southeastern, and the Royals’ record-setting Zach Bray and Carmel record-setter Langston Newton were the meet’s lone individual double winners.

HSE's Troy Reeder (blue jersey) starts to make his move in the 1,600-meter run. He won in 4:16.49.
■ The Royals won the 4×400-meter relay in 3:19.03, as seniors Nate Brown, Tyler Duffy, David Calhoun, and junior Zach Reitzug bettering the old mark of 3:20.47.
■ Bray, who won both hurdles events, clipped the 300-meter hurdles in 37.88, breaking the old mark of 38.41. HSE teammates Reitzug and Jacob Wright added to the 1-2-3 finish, placing second and third, respectively. Reitzug was the Hamilton County champion. Bray won the highs in 14.38 on Thursday.
■ HSE senior Nathan Shuck vaulted 15-01 in the pole vault, ecliping the the record of 15-0, set in 2005.
■ Carmel’s Newton shattered the sectional discus throw mark of 181-11 with a 188-01 effort. The Kentucky-bound senior also won the shot put with a toss of 57-04.25.;16.49) in the 1,600,
Other Southeastern firsts came from Ryan Davis (11.06), who nipped Hamilton Heights’ Logan Cunningham (11.07) in the 100-meter dash; Troy Reeder (4:16.49) won the 1,600; and Taylor Christensen edged Reitzug 21-08.75 to 21-08.50 in the long jump.

Sydney Wesley's homer put Fishers ahead 5-3 in the third inning/HC Sports Daily file photo.
Sydney Wesley hit the first grand slam home run in Fishers High School history, and the Lady Royals dealt Westfield a 7-5 Hoosier Crossroads Conference loss on Thursday.
The Lady Tigers used a six-run third inning to pull out the victory.
Westfield started the scoring with a three-run third to take a 3-0 lead. The Lady Tigers roared back in the bottom half of the inning for six runs.
| HS ROUNDUP |
The Fishers rally started with a single by Regan Sharp who advanced to third on a well executed bunt by Robyn Berkel. After a Brittany Sugg single and a fielder’s choice by Megan Lalioff, that failed to get the lead runner and loaded the bases. Up stepped Wesley, a junior outfielder, and her blast sent Fishers ahead 5-3.
Emily Richardson doubled and eventually scored on a grounder by Aly Hendricks to make it 6-3.
Both teams scored runs in the fourth and Westfield added one in the 7th to make it 7-5.
Wesley led the offense going 2-for-2 with the 4 RBIs. Lucy Wolff got the win. Next up, the Lady Tigers face Zionsville in the Carmel Sectional at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Freshman Jessica Lorenz quenches her thirst during a break in action on a hot day at the Noblesville tennis courts. She won a three-set match, giving Fishers a much-needed victory at No. 3 singles.
It’s not easy beating a good team three times in the same season, but the Fishers tennis team found a way to do it.

HSE senior Kristie Hsu went out a winner at No. 1 singles.
And it took a real gut check to get it done.
The No. 7 Lady Tigers, in search of the school’s first sectional in girls tennis, defeated Hamilton No. 12 Southeastern 3-2 in the opening round of the Noblesville Sectional on Wednesday.
That’s the identical score of their May 3 match, and the Lady Tigers won the Hoosier Crossroads Conference tourney on Saturday by 2 points over the Lady Royals.

Fishers (16-1) came back after losing the first set in all three singles matches, as well as the opening set at No. 2 doubles.
“I think it’s about time for a rally,’’ coach Don Roesler said as he surveyed the situation.
Indeed they did rally. Make that a big-time rally . . . as the veteran coach kept offering words of encouragement to his squad as he went from one match to another.
It came down to freshman Jessica Lorenz, whose victory at No. 3 singles was the determining factor in Fishers’ first HCC championship. On Wednesday, she got past senior Taylor Grayson in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
And it came down to the Fishers doubles teams coming through in the clutch, especially at No. 2 doubles, where Catlin Gardner and Jayne Henn pulled out a three-set, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. That was the same scenario — No. 3 singles and both doubles — for Fishers’ victory against HSE on May 3.
The Lady Tigers will advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship against the host Lady Millers, who defeated Hamilton Heights 5-0.
Southeastern’s points came at No. 1 singles where senior Kristie Hsu defeated junior Kailey Eaton 6-3, 6-4 for the third time this season, and at No. 2 singles, where junior Kelly Iden prevailed 6-1, 6-3 against Denmark exchange student Benedicte Hejgaard 6-1, 6-3.
