Sectional Tournament Pairings on SCOREBOARD.
North Central, the preseason No. 1, has been perched at the top of the rankings twice this season, as has Southeastern. Both the Panthers and Royals arguably are the most experienced teams in the field.
Hamilton Southeastern, which has won 13 straight games and two of the past three sectionals, and North Central, which won state two years ago and lost to eventual state champion Bloomington South in last year’s Southport Semistate, will be meeting for the third time this season.
North Central defeated visiting HSE 81-76 on Dec. 17, and the Royals smacked the Panthers 89-80 in the championship game of the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic at New Castle 13 days later.
So Game On!
Hamilton Southeastern is the defending champion at Noblesville in what is the state’s toughest big-school sectional this season, and most seasons for that matter. It’s also a sectional that could not be more wide open.
Sectional Swimming: 20th Title In Row For HSE
With only a couple of events remaining and the outcome not in doubt, Hamilton Southeastern swimming coach Andy Pedersen was asked, “Does winning ever get old.’’

HSE coach Andy Pedersen (right) and high school principal Matt Kegley share a laugh toward the end of the boys sectional.
He leaned back, folded his arms and chuckled, “What do you think?’’ His Royals not only won the Southeastern Sectional boys swimming and diving championship, it marked the 20thconsecutive year for his team to hoist the trophy high in the air.

“I went through the other side of it last year when Fishers snapped our 15thstraight girls sectional champion winning streak. I like this feeling much, much better,’’ Pedersen said with a big smilie. Southeastern totaled 537 points to runner-up Fishers’ 381. At Noblesville, top-ranked Carmel won its fifth straight sectional. The Greyhounds compiled 514.5 points to runner-up Noblesville’s 391 and third-place Westfield’s 377.5 The Royals’ depth showed, but they also won all three relays, and got wins from Ricky Kelley (100 fly), Jackson Russell (200 IM) and sophomore Cody Coldron (diving). Fishers had two double winners in juniors Chris Cutter (500 free and 100 back) and Davis Arick (50 and 100 free).

Carmel, HSE Lead Boys Sectional Swim Prelims

Noblesville and Westfield also showed their strength by qualifying 26 and 25 swims, respectively.
Over at Southeastern, Fishers, which had top seeds in eight events, followed the Royals by qualifying 20 swims for Saturday.
Fishers had two lead the way in two individual events. Davis Arick was tops in the 50-yard and 100-free events, and Chris Cutter was the top seed in the 50-freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.
Also, Anderson senior Kyle Johnson topped two events — 200 free and 100 butterfly.

now must hold home court Friday night to secure a share.
No. 14 Warren Central (14-6) stunned the visiting Greyhounds 43-42 on a 3-point shot by Jordan Garnett with about 5 seconds remaining on Tuesday night.
Actually, the sophomore was a difference-maker twice. With 1:20 showing and the Hounds leading by four points, Garnett made a trey, cutting the lead to 41-40.
Warren Central finished MIC play at 6-1. Carmel (14-4, 5-1 MIC) ends conference play Friday against Terre Haute North (16-4), which has three MIC losses.
Carmel fell behind 13-6 in the first quarter, and trailed 26-21 at intermission. The Hounds led 34-33 after three quarters only to be outscored 10-8 in the fourth quarter.
It was a well-played game. Carmel, which lost by two points last week at Hamilton Central while committing 18 turnovers, only had six turnovers against Warren Central, which made eight.
The Hounds made 5-of-16 3-point shots and 7-of-10 free throws, but shot only 34.1 percent from the field. Warren Central, meanwhile, shot 46.2 percent.
Senior Ben Gardner scored 17 points and was the lone Greyhound in double figures. He also had 3 assists and 2 steals.
Senior Sam Curts had 9 points and 5 rebounds, and junior Michael Volovic had 6 points and 2 assists.
Valentine’s Day Games Sweeten The Mix
Carmel basketball coach Scott Heady just shook his head, smiled, and let out a slight chuckle when asked about playing a basketball game on Valentine’s Day.
“All I know is we’re playing for the conference championship that night. That’s all I’m thinking about right now . . . we’ve got to take care of the conference,’’ Heady said after his Class 4A No. 3 Greyhounds lost by two points last Thursday at top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern.
So, in other words, that means Cupid’s arrow will have to wait as Heady’s wife and a few other coaches’ wives will have to put any Valentine’s Day celebration on hold.
Six Hamilton County teams will be playing on Tuesday night.
Carmel (14-3) can win the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference outright with a win at Warren Central (13-6), which has one loss in the conference.
The Greyhounds are unbeaten in the MIC.
After Tuesday’s encounter, the Hounds on Friday play host to MIC foe Terre Haute, which has three conference losses.
Another big game will be at Pike, where Hamilton Southeastern clearly has a Bull’s-Eye on its back. The Royals can only hope the Red Devils don’t have a different kind of arrow in mind for them.
Southeastern (17-2), seeking its 13th straight victory, can match the school’s longest winning streak. The Royals won 13 consecutive regular-season games in the 2002-03 season.
Pike, which has been ranked most of the season, owns a 12-5 record.
Other games Tuesday find Heritage Christian at University; Lawrence Central is at Noblesville; Northwestern visits Hamilton Heights in Mid-Indiana Conference play; and Westfield treks to New Palestine.

Carmel won two of three relays, and two individual events, but the overall depth made its usual big statement for the Lady Greyhounds program.
Carmel’s streak is the longest active in the country in any sport and tied for the third-longest in high school sports history. Punahou (HI) High School’s 29 straight in boys swimming from 1958-86 is the national standard.
HSE Wins County Frosh BB Tourney To Go 18-1
Hamilton County Sports Daily
Hamilton Southeastern captured the 2012 Hamilton County freshman basketball Tournament championship on Saturday at the Mill in Noblesville.
The young Royals defeated Westfield 45-33 in the final. Hamilton Heights finished third with a 35-31 victory over Fishers.
Southeastern reached the fin al with a 50-25 decision over Hamilton Heights, and Westfield advance with a 55-43 decision over fishers.
HSE’s toughest came in the opener against Carmel. The Royals pulled out a 52-48 overtime vict5ory. In other first-round games, Hamilton Heights edged Guerin Catholic 46-43; Westfield upended University 48-35; and Fishers got past Noblesville 46-39.
Hamilton Southeastern has won 18 of 19 games this season.

Carmel senior Abby Dean (3) tries to pressure North Central's Jasmine Falcon into a turnover in Friday night's second game.
Simply put, Zionsville had no answer for 6-foot-3 Jenn Anderson, and Carmel could not match up with North Central’s inside game, led by 6-5 Nariah Taylor.
Thus, the tournament trail ended for Zionsville 58-34 and defending champion Carmel 59-48. The Lady Greyhounds also lost to North Central by nine points during the regular season.
Anderson, who was able to sit out the final 12-13 minutes in the second half and get some much deserved rest, hit Zionsville (4-17) with a 19-point, 10-rebound performance. Anderson made 8-of-12 shots and 3-of-4 free throws.
The Auburn-bound Taylor had 14 points and 19 rebounds.

Zionsville's Laurie King can't stop Jenn Anderson.
The No. 14 Lady Panthers (18-5) out-rebounded the Lady Greyhounds by a resounding 53-21 margin, and Westfield (14-8) won the boards 30-20.
“I wanted to give Jenn a rest once we got a 20-point lead. She seldom comes out of games, and we felt like she was due some rest,’’ said Westfield coach Shane Sumpter, who will be making his third straight trip to the final game.
“I told the kids that you can’t win sectionals unless you play on Saturday nights. We’re happy to be there and just to know we’ll get a shot at winning, and we know we’ll need to give it our best shot.’’
Sumpter led Westfield to the Class 4A sectional title two years ago, and lost to Carmel last year.
He said after winning the opening game that it didn’t matter who they played.
But it stands to reason that tonight’s Anderson-Taylor matchup could be something special, for fans and coaches alike.

Gary Harris is scheduled to play in two All-Star games in the spring/HC Sports Daily file photo.
Hamilton Southeastern senior Gary Harris has been selected as one of two Indiana high school basketball players to play in the annual McDonald’s All-American Game.
