Sagarin Ratings Provide Interesting Picture

Three more weeks remain before sectionals kick off on Friday, Oct. 21.

Will 2011 produce any state championship games  or titles for Hamilton County football teams?

The IHSAA will air the tournament draw on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.

If you put any stock in the Sagarin Rating System, then . . . yes . . . there’s a strong possibility. If things play out the way they currently stand in those computer ratings, three county teams should be playing for state championships.

Class 5A Carmel, with the state’s highest rating (107.53), and No. 3 Hamilton Southeastern (102.35) play in different sectionals this season, so they could follow the road to a possible Class 5A collision in the state championship game on Nov. 26.

Carmel is ranked No. 2 in the state behind No. 1 Warren Central in the state polls. And, of course, only one of those Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference schools could advance to the state finals since they are in the same sectional.

Those fierce rivals square off Friday night at Lucas Oil Stadium. Ironically, Warren Central – second in Sagarin Ratings – is ranked No. 15 nationally.

In Class A, two-time defending state champion Lafayette Central Catholic  is both No. 1 in the AP and Coaches’ Association polls and No. 1 in that class, according to Sagarin. Sheridan is No. 2 in the power rankings. LCC is unbeaten and riding a 36-game winning streak; Sheridan is 4-2, but riding a great deal of momentum with a four-game winning streak after losing to Class 3A Western Boone and second-ranked Hamilton Heights, which is No. 6 in the Sagarin ratings.

 But first things first.

A lot must happen before county schools can start thinking championships, let alone thinking about possibly winning a championship.

Carmel, for one, will know more about itself after Friday night, and then there’s that regular-season finale at No. 4 Ben Davis. Warren Central also has highly regarded Center Grove on the schedule before the postseason.

It would only be fitting if the draw lands Carmel and Warren in opposite brackets and they meet in the Sectional 5 final.

It would probably be fitting for Hamilton Southeastern and defending 5A state champion Fishers in Sectional 4. So far, both town of fishers schools have proved they are the cream of the crop among county schools in that sectional. Continue reading

>>>Noblesville and Westfield own identical 1-4 records, and each is in danger of finishing with losing records for the fourth straight season.

>>>Fishers and Guerin Catholic are in good positions to build on  3-2 records, as is Sheridan, which has won its last three games.

>>>No one has a better four-year record than Hamilton Southeastern’s Scott May, who’s 43-9 with an .827 percentage heading into Friday night’s visit by Westfield, and the 5A No. 6 Royals appear to be in the best position to win the Hoosier Crossroads  Conference championship for the fifth consecutive season, or at least share it for the third straight year.

Avon’s 17-14 victory over Brownsburg last week threw the HCC race into a four-team logjam. Like Southeastern, Avon, Brownsburg and Zionsville are 4-1. HSE’s loss was a one-pointer to Brownsburg.

>>>Defending 5A state champion Fishers, which shared the title with HSE the past two seasons, still must deal with once-beaten Zionsville and Brownsburg. Fishers coach Rick Wimmer is 33-9 over the past four seasons (.786). His Tigers were 14-1 in 2010.

2 ACL Injuries Can’t Stop Fishers’ Allie Gorgol

Allie Gorgol probably doesn’t know how good her high school career might have been had she had two good legs to stand on.

Next competitive level for Allie Gorgol will be at the University of Kentucky/HC Sports Daily photo: Mark Morrow.

She just knows she’s done well and is still doing quite well, thank you, despite the agony of two ACL injuries — one on each knee. So does her coach, Ben Beasley, and her Fishers High School girls soccer teammates and most likely her opponents, too.

“Allie is a competitor. She works hard, and she’s worked extremely hard to get back to where she is,’’ Beasley said. “She’s been through a lot, but she stayed positive and just worked hard to get well and stay healthy.’’

Gorgol, who will play for the University of Kentucky in 2012, just hopes her knees hold up while she tries her best to help her teammates enjoy possibly even more success than a year ago in an 11-win season.

So far, so good. Gorgol had a game-winning goal in the ECNL second flight national championship this summer, and she’s playing well for the Lady Tigers this season.

She also hopes she has better luck than Fishers basketball standout Brooke Russell, who missed two seasons because of ACL injuries, and then missed all but three of four games last season as a senior when she suffered a slight tear that put her back on the sideline.

“Yes, that was a bad deal for Brooke,’’ Gorgol said. “We had a lot in common since we had the same type of injuries, went to the same doctor, and were involved in the same rehab. “I don’t have any bad thoughts . . . just want to stay positive and hope for the best.’’

No. 1 Hounds Net Win Over No. 2 North Central

In a battle of the state’s top two Indiana high school boys tennis teams, Carmel left little doubt.

Talk about making a statement. The defending state-champion Greyhounds pitched a 5-0 shutout at No. 2 North Central.

ROUNDUP

The junior varsity Hounds also were impressive in their 13-0 victory.

The varsity scores:

1s-Mihir Kumar  d. Andrew Stutz  6-1,6-3

2s-Sameer Kumar  d. Riley Reist  6-0,6-0

3s-Chris Quammen d. Ari Gerstein  6-3,6-4

1d-Connor Dunn/Elliott Yee d. Jake Minner/Luke Lohrstorfer  6-0,6-7(8),6-3

2d-Charlie Emhardt/Patrick Farrell  d. Will Reifeis/Pat McAuley  6-2,6-1

“Anytime you get a win against North Central you have to feel good. They always put up a good fight,’’ coach Mike Bostic said.

“Sameer really took charge from the beginning in his first match at home. Mihir is looking really confident with each match he plays. Emhardt and Farrell took care of business. Quammen really had to stay patient tonight. With all of this competition, I look for Quammen to really improve and build confidence for the playoffs.

“Dunn and Yee were in a dog fight with an experienced team. North Central was dictating play and we were not very sharp with our mid-court volleys and strategy. I was proud of how the boys stayed focused in the third set.  It was good for them to be tested. I know the boys are looking forward to some much needed rest this weekend.”

Pavelka Named Millers’ 1ST Athlete Of The Week

Morgan Pavelka

Noblesville High School has started a new program this year to recognize student-athletes and their achievements/accomplishments throughout the season,  Noblesville athletic director Michael Hasch announced.

Each week the head varsity coach will nominate a varsity player based on their prior week stats (Mon. thru Sat.).

“A committee of five (three out of season head coaches and both athletic directors) will vote on who they think should be the NHS-Qdoba Athlete-Of-The-Week,” Hasch said.

The recipient of the first award is Morgan Pavelka.

Pavelka  had 14 kills, 13 aces and 19 block assists on Aug. 20 in The Lady Millers’ 3-0 volleyball victory in the Pike Invitational.

In Noblesville’s victory over Brownsburg on Aug. 25, Pavelka continued her stellar play. The veteran team member contributed nine aces and three blocks to the cause for coach Steve Ward’s Lady Millers.

Complete results are on Scoreboard.
