GAME ON! HSE, NC Meet In Sectional 8 Opener

The season will end early for one of the two highest ranked basketball teams in Class 4A, when Sectional 8 tips off at the Mill in Noblesville on Feb. 28.

Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern (19-2) and No. 2  North Central (18-4) were matched up right off the bat in Sunday’s blind draw pairings.

Sectional Tournament Pairings on SCOREBOARD.

North Central, the preseason No. 1, has been perched at the top of the rankings twice this season, as has Southeastern. Both  the Panthers and Royals arguably are the most experienced teams in the field.

Hamilton Southeastern, which has won 13 straight games and two of the past three sectionals, and North Central, which won state two years ago and lost to eventual state champion Bloomington South in last year’s Southport Semistate, will be meeting for the third time this season.

North Central defeated visiting HSE 81-76 on Dec. 17, and the Royals smacked the Panthers 89-80 in the championship game of the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic at New Castle 13 days later.

So Game On!

Hamilton Southeastern is the defending champion at Noblesville in what is the state’s toughest big-school sectional this season, and most seasons for that matter. It’s also a sectional that could not be more wide open.

Fishers’ Mitch Sliga STATE Wrestling Champion!

Hamilton County Sports Daily

Mitch Sliga’s hard word, dedication and persistence finally brought him the prize  he’s sought for three years.

THIRD TIME A CHARM: Junior Mitch Sliga put an exclamation point on his 49-0 season on Saturday night at Banker's Life Fieldhouse/HC sports Daily photo: Shawn Barney.

In his third trip to the state wrestling finals, the junior wrestling sensation from Fishers High School is now an IHSAA  state champion!

And he’s also a first-time state champion in two different sports for Fishers.

The Greco-Roman wrestling national champion as a freshman was a member of the 2010 Fishers Tigers Class 5A state football championship team. And now he’s an individual state champion in Indiana high school wrestling in the 195-pound weight class.

And he got it done in an impressive manner on Saturday night at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse.

Sliga pinned two earlier opponents in a matter of 70 seconds. The final match took a little more time. He led 2-1 after the first period, and then broke a 2-2 tie against Merrillville’s Kourtney Berry (32-1), ranked No. 2 in the state, in a pin fall with 39.7 seconds remaining in the second period. The pin came in 3:20.

“Winning in that fashion, the way I got the pin, is just amazing,’’ Sliga said during an IHSAA webcast interview.

Sliga, who gave up football after his sophomore season to concentrate on wrestling, was third in the state at 189 pounds in each of the past two seasons.

Sectional Swimming: 20th Title In Row For HSE

With only a couple of events remaining and the outcome not in doubt, Hamilton Southeastern swimming coach Andy Pedersen was asked, “Does winning ever get old.’’

HSE coach Andy Pedersen (right) and high school principal Matt Kegley share a laugh toward the end of the boys sectional.

He leaned back, folded his arms and chuckled, “What do you think?’’ His Royals not only won the Southeastern Sectional boys swimming and diving championship, it marked the 20thconsecutive year for his team to hoist the trophy high in the air.

Hamilton Southeastern sophomores Cody Coldron (right), the champion, and third-place finisher Seth Winslow qualified for Tuesday's Diving Regional at Fishers High School. Competition starts at 6 p.m./HC Sports Daily photos: Mark Morrow.

“I went through the other side of it last year when Fishers snapped our 15thstraight girls sectional champion winning streak. I like this feeling much, much better,’’ Pedersen said with a big smilie. Southeastern totaled 537 points to runner-up Fishers’ 381. At Noblesville, top-ranked Carmel won its fifth straight sectional. The Greyhounds compiled  514.5 points to runner-up Noblesville’s 391 and third-place Westfield’s 377.5 The Royals’ depth showed, but they also won all three relays, and got wins from Ricky Kelley (100 fly), Jackson Russell (200 IM) and sophomore Cody Coldron (diving). Fishers had two double winners in juniors Chris Cutter (500 free and 100 back) and Davis Arick (50 and 100 free).

Millers Impressive In HCC Win Over Fishers

Fishers' Jon Flemming comes up with the loose ball/HC Sports Daily photos: Shawn Barney.

Noblesville wasn’t necessarily trying to send a message to other Sectional 8 teams, but the Millers probably did.

Fishers' Tyler Alderman blocks Sam Philpott's shot. The 6-8 senior had 7 blocks, while the 6-7 Noblesville junior led all scorers with 23 points

They  might have sent one to themselves, too. Even though it’s unlikely they need to be reminded just how well they are playing.

Noblesville's Daniel Purvlicis comes down with one of his seven rebounds.

They are a good, deep team. They know it, and for most of the game they showed it.

And it appears safe to say that the Millers will have to be reckoned in a little less than two weeks, when arguably the most competitive sectional in the state tips off at The Mill.

The Millers defeated a solid Fishers ball club 67-59 on Friday night, a win on the road that gave coach Dave McCollough a reason to feel good. He seemed pretty relaxed while talking about it, and he even smiled a little.

Noblesville coach Dave McCollough gets his point across to one of the striped shirts.

“It was a win we needed . . . and really wanted to get. Anytime you can win on the road, especially in this league (Hoosier Crossroads Conference), it’s big,’’ he said while hanging up his suit coat on a hanger in the dressing room. “Actually it wasn’t just a good night . . . it’s been a good week, a really good week.’’

Fishers coach Joe Leonard goes over strategy during a timeout.

On Tuesday, the Millers (13-7), winners of six straight games, knocked off No. 15 Lawrence Central 75-67. They finished the conference at 6-3.

As good of a win as it was for Noblesville, it had to be an especially crushing loss to Fishers, which battled hard and has been quite competitive in every game this season. The loss knocked the Tigers (10-9, 6-2 HCC) out of the conference title  picture as Hamilton Southeastern (8-0 ) has wrapped up first place with one game remaining.

“Fishers is a very good basketball team, and it was a good challenge for us, and with the exception of a few moments, and some turnovers, I thought we handled the challenge well,’’ McCollough said. “We were a little rattled at one point, but we held together.’’

One of  those moments came in the final quarter, where the Millers turned over the ball six times.

“We got in a hurry,” McCollough said. “We started rushing things. Our vision narrowed. We need to work on being like quarterbacks, where we’re seeing  the field of play, not just one or two spots.”

Still, it was a good win. What makes the victory even more satisfying, perhaps, is that McCollough is developing depth. He lost two players to injuries and another to a health issue early in the season.

‘Depth-wise, Noblesville was able to use 10 different players, a couple of whom got more playing time than usual because of foul problems to starters.
