Class 3A No. 11 Guerin Catholic rolled over Class A No. 8 University by a resounding 82-39.

Jordan Pickett floats among traffic for two points. The University High junior scored 25 of his team's 39 points.
The bottom line was that University (15-4) couldn’t buy a basket, while the Golden Eagles bombed away at a 54.0 percent clip from the field.
In the process, Guerin Catholic (17-5) matched the most victories in school history and established a regular-season record for victories in six seasons of varsity basketball.
The 2007-08 team won 16 regular-season games and finished 17-6 overall.

Guerin senior Adam Hufford pulled down 12 rebounds. Grant Randle (13) tries to reach for the ball.

GAME ON! HSE, NC Meet In Sectional 8 Opener
The season will end early for one of the two highest ranked basketball teams in Class 4A, when Sectional 8 tips off at the Mill in Noblesville on Feb. 28.
Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern (19-2) and No. 2 North Central (18-4) were matched up right off the bat in Sunday’s blind draw pairings.

Sectional Tournament Pairings on SCOREBOARD.
North Central, the preseason No. 1, has been perched at the top of the rankings twice this season, as has Southeastern. Both the Panthers and Royals arguably are the most experienced teams in the field.
Hamilton Southeastern, which has won 13 straight games and two of the past three sectionals, and North Central, which won state two years ago and lost to eventual state champion Bloomington South in last year’s Southport Semistate, will be meeting for the third time this season.
North Central defeated visiting HSE 81-76 on Dec. 17, and the Royals smacked the Panthers 89-80 in the championship game of the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic at New Castle 13 days later.
So Game On!
Hamilton Southeastern is the defending champion at Noblesville in what is the state’s toughest big-school sectional this season, and most seasons for that matter. It’s also a sectional that could not be more wide open.

Kevin Bates led the Trailblazers with 14 points. Eric Wott and Dominic Dixon each scored nine, and Mitch Tanner added eight points. Dixon also had nine rebounds and 3 blocks; Tanner had 8 rebounds; and Wott had 6 boards.

Lady Blazers All About Toughness, Togetherness

A lot has changed for the University girls basketball team in a year’s time.
The Lady Trailblazers, coming off of a five-win season, were undergoing a new system, and still learning.
“It was a teaching process,’’ Stacey Summitt Mann said about her first team at University.
The teaching aspect was still very much a part of this season’s progress. And it’s paid off, big time.
“Each game we made small goals for ourselves, one or two things to focus on. We used the regular season for it — teaching the fundamental game of basketball and preparing the girls for postseason play. And we constantly talked about it all year. They knew all year that this was their task — to prepare for sectionals,’’ Summitt Mann said.

Coach Stacey Summitt Mann (kneeling) said it's been an extraordinary season with a special group of girls. They're a very cohesive group.
The Lady Trailblazers certainly came together at the right time, and they already have two more victories and have two fewer losses than they did a year ago.
University won only four games during the regular season and now will take a 7-14 record to the Class A regional at Southwestern (Shelby) on Saturday. The Lady Trailblazers host Southwestern (14-8) in the 10 a.m. game. Clay City (18-6) will play Jac-Cen-Del (16-7) in the second game. The championship tilt is set for 8 p.m.

Class A No. 6 University held on to deal 2A Heritage Christian a 59-56 loss on Tuesday night.
Visiting Heritage Christian (12-8), which has lost its past two games by a total of four points, drilled 26-of-30 free throws to stay in pursuit of the Trailblazers, who led 27-21 at halftime.
But poor free-throwing nearly cost the Trailblazers. They made only 8-of-24 free throws.
Jordon Picket, the Hamilton County scoring leader with a 25.8 scoring average, poured in 30 points.
Mitch Tanner and Kevin Bates added 10 and 6 points, respectively, for University.
Anthony Warrum led the Eagles with 24 points.
University (15-2) is four wins shy of matching the school’s most victories.
The 2004-05 team was 19-6.
The Trailblazers, who play host to Horizon Christian on Friday and Faith Christian on Saturday, so far have posted the school’s fewest number of losses in any one season. The 2003-04 team also lost only six games, and won 13.
Valentine’s Day Games Sweeten The Mix
Carmel basketball coach Scott Heady just shook his head, smiled, and let out a slight chuckle when asked about playing a basketball game on Valentine’s Day.
“All I know is we’re playing for the conference championship that night. That’s all I’m thinking about right now . . . we’ve got to take care of the conference,’’ Heady said after his Class 4A No. 3 Greyhounds lost by two points last Thursday at top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern.
So, in other words, that means Cupid’s arrow will have to wait as Heady’s wife and a few other coaches’ wives will have to put any Valentine’s Day celebration on hold.
Six Hamilton County teams will be playing on Tuesday night.
Carmel (14-3) can win the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference outright with a win at Warren Central (13-6), which has one loss in the conference.
The Greyhounds are unbeaten in the MIC.
After Tuesday’s encounter, the Hounds on Friday play host to MIC foe Terre Haute, which has three conference losses.
Another big game will be at Pike, where Hamilton Southeastern clearly has a Bull’s-Eye on its back. The Royals can only hope the Red Devils don’t have a different kind of arrow in mind for them.
Southeastern (17-2), seeking its 13th straight victory, can match the school’s longest winning streak. The Royals won 13 consecutive regular-season games in the 2002-03 season.
Pike, which has been ranked most of the season, owns a 12-5 record.
Other games Tuesday find Heritage Christian at University; Lawrence Central is at Noblesville; Northwestern visits Hamilton Heights in Mid-Indiana Conference play; and Westfield treks to New Palestine.

Terese Wade (5) and North Central's Rachael Gregory dive for the loose ball.
And it undoubtedly was especially sweet for first-year Heights coach Tod Windlan, who was the varsity basketball coach at Delta in the 2009-10 season.
Class A University, under second-year head coach Stacey Summitt Mann, won the private Carmel school’s first sectional since the 2009-10 season and the school’s third since it opened in the 2003-04 season.
The Lady Trailblazers (7-14) pulled out a 32-20 victory over Indpls. Tindley in Sectional 58 at Bethesda Christian. They also defeated Tindley by six points in the regular season.
