Lady Greyhounds Win Battle Of Unbeatens

Carmel's Haley Wild and Aliana Finkelmeier were pretty relaxed after going up 3-0 in the second set of the No. 1 doubles match/HC Sports Daily photos: Mark Morrow.
“Beautiful weather . . . great day for tennis . . . it’s going to be fun,’’ Carmel coach Mike Bostic said before the start of Thursday’s highly hyped tennis match between two state-ranked unbeatens at Fishers.

Sophomore Bailey Padgett serves in the second set, which she won 6-0.
That it was — especially fun for No. 2 Carmel (11-0), which defeated No. 7 Fishers (14-1) by a somewhat surprising 5-0 score.

The previous night, Carmel was a 4-1 winner over No. 11 Hamilton Southeastern, which recently lost to Fishers.
If it was a measuring stick, then the Lady Tigers have a ways to go, starting with the weekend’s Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship, followed by the Noblesville Sectional on March 18.
The Lady Tigers figure to be favorites in the HCC meet. They went 9-0 in head-to-head conference matches this season.
There’s no question that Fishers was playing at a little higher level against a good, experienced team that returned four key starters, including No. 2 singles state champion Mikaela Carlson, now a senior, from last year’s state championship team. And Bailey Padgett was the state runner-up at No. 1 singles.

Fishers' Kailey Eaton talks things over with coach Don Roesler after the junior, who owns a 13-2 record, went up 4-3 in the first set of No. 1 singles.
Going into the match, coach Don Roesler, whose team has never beaten Carmel, said he thought they would need to win both doubles and No. 1 singles to pull it out. “Being in a sectional opposite Carmel, we couldn’t meet again until state, and they’d have to first beat Evansville Memorial,” he said. “If we get out of the sectional, we could have a good road ahead.”
Bostic said his girls were really motivated against Fishers, pointing out, “We played one of our best overall matches of the year.’’
The Results:
1s-Bailey Padgett d. Kailey Eaton 6-4, 6-0
2s-Mikaela Carlson d. Benedicte Hejgaard 6-0, 6-1
3s-Molly Fletchall d. Jessica Lorenz 6-0, 6-2
1d -Alaina Finkelmeier/Haley Wild d. Ellen Hornett/Olivia Ruthsatz 6-2, 6-2
2d-Hannah Elliott/Michelle Li d. Jayne Henn/Caitlin Gardner 6-0, 6-1
“Bailey fought through a tough first set and then she really played loose and starting hitting her shots. Mikaela is just so mentally tough. There is no replacing a player like her.
“Molly bounced back after a tough loss against HSE and really played well. Both doubles teams really came out firing and kept the momentum going through the whole match. The junior varsity team proved it is the best junior varsity team in the state today (14-0 win for a 11-0 record). It is playoff time and I feel really good about where our team is and our chances. It is time to do everything a little bit better and that is what we plan to do.”
Bailey Padgett, who survived a tough start to finally defeat Kailey Eaton 6-4, 6-0, said it’s all about team for the Lady Greyhounds as they gear up for the Carmel Sectional.

The Royals, winners of four in a row, are now 13-8 going into a two-game HCC series with Noblesville May 8 and 10. The first encounter is at Southeastern.

Reigning sectional champion Westfield is 10-9, and loser of three straight games.
The senior right-hander walked 1 and struck out 2. Losing pitcher Wade Burtron went the distance. He allowed 5 hits and fanned 12.

Hamilton County Sports Daily
Jennifer Thompson will take over as varsity volleyball coach of the University Lady Trailblazers in the 2012-13 season, University high school announced today.

Volleyball coach Jennifer Thompson/Photo: University High School.
Thompson, who has also served as an assistant for the Lady Trailblazers basketball team since 2010, succeeds Rob McEwan, who plans to spend more time with his family. McEwan compiled a 44-34 won-loss record during his three seasons coaching the Lady Trailblazers.
Thompson, a Noblesville resident, excelled in volleyball at Campbell University. She was named MVP as a junior and senior at the Div. I school, and she was first-team all-conference and an academic all-conference player. She graduated magna cum laude from the North Carolina school in 1991.
By creating an atmosphere where players feel valued and understand that their team’s success is the result of their actions and contributions, Thompson said she hopes to use her new coaching role to develop each player as a whole person and to instill in them the school’s core values.
Though the 2011-12 University High School volleyball team will graduate five seniors next month, Thompson sees promise in underclass ranks in Emily Johns, Ellie Klemsz, Taylor Rodgers and Jada Franklin. All gained varsity playing time last season.
“We have some good height and strong players, and I believe we will be a disciplined, scrappy team next year,” said Thompson. “I look forward to being competitive throughout the season. Our ultimate goal will be to win a sectional championship.”

“Up and down the line up, we are starting to put more quality at bats together. I can’t say enough about how this team has played the game over the past week. If we can continue to play at this level, we can be a very dangerous team.”
