Baseball: Tough Draw For Sectional 8 Teams
Hamilton County Sports Daily
Based on state rankings, it would appear that Zionsville’s Class 4A No. 2 Zionsville baseball team should be favored to win the Noblesville Sectional, when Sectional 8 gets under way on Wednesday, May 23.
None of the other teams in the seven-team field are ranked, though Fishers was ranked No. 10 before losing four straight games.
It was pretty much the same scenario a year ago at Zionsville, where the Eagles entered as the team to beat.
But the Eagles were grounded in a hurry.
Westfield, despite a losing record, won the title, and then reached the final of the Avon Regional.
But in Sectional 8, arguably the toughest sectional in the state, there really isn’t a favorable draw.
And this year’s pairings, released on Tuesday by the IHSAA, certainly didn’t do Zionsville any favors. Nor did the draw do any favors for Fishers or Hamilton Southeastern, two of the better teams in the field based on high double-digit winning records. The Tigers are 20-7 and the Royals 18-8..
Zionsville owns the best won-loss record in the field at 20-4.
Fishers, which lost two competitive Hoosier Crossroads Conference games to Zionsville this season, opens the tournament against a pretty good North Central team. That winner gets Noblesville, which drew the first-round bye.
In the May 24 opener, Zionsville and HSE lock horns, and the winner gets the Westfield-Carmel winner in the second round.
Zionsville and Hamilton Heights were the only Hamilton County teams to receive byes. The Class 3A Huskies meet Muncie South on Memorial Day at Yorktown.

Avon’s Keegan McKinney took medalist honors with an even-par 72, 1 shot ahead of Noblesville’s Jackson Wright.

Another battle between Hamilton County schools comes off Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wood Wind Golf Club in the annual Hamilton County Tournament.
“I’m really proud of the way the guys hung in there all day. We talked at the beginning of the year about setting goals of winning the conference, county and the sectional. We were able to attain the first one, now we have to get back to work and try for the county on Saturday,” Noblesville coach Gary Sewell said. “I think the way we played the back nine (we started on hole 10) set us up well for the day. We really played that nine well and I knew we would be in it if we just kept away from big numbers, which we were able to do.
“This conference is the best golf conference in the state and for us to be fortunate to win is an incredible feat.”

The first part of 2012 has been quite a championship season for the Fishers High School girls tennis team.
The Lady Tigers went 9-0 against Hoosier Crossroads Opponents during the regular season, and they added the HCC tournament championship at Avon on Saturday.

No. 3 singles champ: Fishers freshman Jessica Lorenz provides valuable points with her victory.
Yet, latching onto the trophy wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for Fishers, which got past in-town rival Hamilton Southeastern in another hotly contested showdown 45-43.
The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Royals 3-2 in their regular-season match matchup for the annual Mudsock Trophy.
And it was an especially big and satisfying day for coach Don Roesler’s Lady Tigers, since it was the first HCC girls tennis championship for the school.
Freshman Jessica Lorenz’s victory at No. 3 singles proved especially critical for the Lady Tigers after HSE’s Kristie Hsu and Kelly Iden won Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.
Fishers junior Kailey Eaton lost 3 matches this season, 2 coming against Hsu, a senior.
More points for Fishers came at No. 2 singles, where foreign exchange student Benedicte Heigaard reached the semifinals.
Also, the talented tandem of Fishers juniors Olivia Ruthsatz and Ellen Hornett won No. 1 doubles.
Next up for Fishers, 14-1 in head-to-head competition this season, losing only to No. 2 Carmel last week, is the Noblesville Sectional on March 18, where the Lady Tigers join Hamilton Heights and HCC foes Hamilton Southeastern and the host Lady Millers.
“I have been looking forward to this year for awhile. With returning coaches Dale and Christy Seipel I felt we had a strong team this year. With returning letterman Kailey, Olivia and Jayne, we had a strong base. I had seen Benedicte, our foreign exchange student, and Ellen, our transfer from Marion H.S., hit in the summer and knew they could contribute.
With freshman Caitlin (Gardner) and Jessica also making the varsity cut, I knew we had a chance to win the conference,” said Fishers coach Don Roesler.
“We went 9-0 in conference and really wanted to back it up at the conference tournament. Well we did, we won conference for the first time. We have been working hard and hope to win at sectionals, something no FHS tennis team has done yet.’’

Royals, Tigers Finish 1-3 In HCC Boys Track
Track and field in the Town of Fishers is about as good as it gets.

Hamilton Southeastern's Zach Bray claimed the HCC 110-meter hurdles title in what has been an outstanding season for the senior. He's usually first to the finish line/HC Sports Daily photo: Andrew Duvall.
The third-ranked Hamilton County boys followed the No. 2 Lady Royals’ lead in capturing Hoosier Crossroads Conference track and field meets this week.
The girls won on Tuesday; the boys won on Friday.
And, too, the Fishers girls finished a close second to HSE in the girls meet, and the Tigers were third in the boys HCC meet.
And both schools appear capable of causing quite a bit of commotion in IHSAA girls and boys sectionals next week.
Hamilton Southeastern’s overall depth was the difference on Friday’s at Lafayette Jeff.
The Royals totaled 155 points. Avon was second with 123, followed by Fishers (102). Noblesville was fifth (80) and Westfield (31) rounding out the Hamilton County field.

HSE's Zach Reitzug smashed the 300-meter hurdles record in 38.04/Submitted photo.
Southeastern scored heavily in the hurdles, where junior Zach Reitzug set a record in the 300 hurdles in 38.04, breaking the 38.83 mark set by Zionsville’s Shane Mikesky. Sophomore Jacob Wright placed second, while senior Zach Bray won the 110 hurdles in 14.55, and Wright was fifth.
■ Senior Troy Reeder won the 3,200 in 9:20.18.
■ Hamilton Southeastern also won the 4×100-meter relay in 42.72, with sophomore Khalid Fuller, junior Ryan Davis, sophomore Cameron Polk and sophomore Phoenix Badua handling the baton.
■ The Royals also scored crucial points in the 200 dash (Cameron Polk, 2nd), the discus (Austin Hogan, 2nd), 400 dash (David Calhoun, 2nd; Tyler Duffy, 3rd), 3200 (Alex Zoumbaris, 3rd), long jump (Taylor Christensen, 3rd; Reitzug, 4th), 1600 (Sawyer Hitchcock, 4th), 200 (Loyd Turner 4th), high jump (Brendon Murry, 4th), and the 4×400 relay was the runner-up to record-setting Fishers.
Junior Diquis Manley, who gave Fishers a first in the 400-meter dash, anchored the 4×400 relay, joining sophomore teammates Michael Ryan and Patrick Chavis, and junior Nikko Foster.
