Guerin Catholic boys basketball coach Pete Smith, on his feelings about any potential future move-ins: “We don’t want any move-ins.  We want to do it the right way. We have four Catholic junior highs, and kids who are Catholic who come in as 9th graders from area schools. I respect the coaches in our area too much to hope for move-ins, and I was in their shoes when I was the coach at both at Noblesville & Carmel.’’

“As far as North Central and HSE on Saturday night, it will be a slugfest.  These two teams are the best two teams in Sectional 8, but they both realize there are several other teams in our sectional capable of defeating them on a Saturday night in early March.’’ — Zionsville boys basketball coach Shaun Busick.

”It came down to the last 3 girls on the last 3 holes — just the way we like it,” coach Steve Guenin said after his Lady Royals won their second straight girls state golf championship. “I told Brooke (Beegle) on (No.) 18 she needed to make birdie to tie for the individual low. The first thing she asked was, ‘what about the team?’ . . .  That’s the kind of girl she is.”

“I still wonder how good this team is. However, I know how good they can be so before we worry about conference titles, we have to finish this week.  We play No. 5 Cathedral at Murray Stadium on Wednesday (Sept. 21) before traveling to highly regarded Dublin Coffman (OH) for a Saturday game.  These will be two very tough games that should tell us if we are ready for the IHSAA State Tournament which starts in about two weeks,’’ Frank Dixon, coach of the top-ranked Carmel girls soccer team.

>>>“When they (Noblesville) got us down early, I like the way we got back up and came after them. There was no quit. We’re not where we want to be, but we may me a heck of a lot closer than I would have imagined after one game,’’ Fishers football coach Rick Wimmer.

>>>Noblesville coach Lance Scheib, on his Millers’ opening football loss to Fishers: Week 1 is over and we finally fought and competed at every level.  I feel the only way we will be successful this season is to continue to compete each and every play, when this happens we give ourselves a chance each and every game.  The bottom line is we need to win, the players are in position to win and now need to take the final step and finish a game out and win. Each time we finish a contest, we look at the score board and the score explains how we played, the score tells us if we are successful or not; I know we are close as a program, but I am not much for being close.’’

>>>”We are getting better and I look forward to the team we are going to become at the end of the season.  This weekend proved why we are ranked Nationally by ESPN/Powerade and deserving of our No. 2 ranking in Indiana,” Hamilton Southeastern girls soccer coach Greg Davidson said after his Lady Royals defeated No. 1 South Bend St. Joseph’s and No. 5 Cathedral in the St. Joe Indian’s Invitational.

   • Former Wabash College defensive coordinator Jake Gilbert, on replacing Bo Beldon as head football coach at Westfield: “Bo is a great guy and a friend of mine. He’s shown tremendous support for what I’m doing, and I really appreciate that. He built the foundation for this program, and is responsible for the growth in the youth leagues. And he really put in a great effort overseeing the program while having to compete in several different classes (in a short period of time). He deserves a great deal of credit.”

  • Guerin Catholic basketball coach Pete Smith’s thoughts on moving from Class 2A to Class 3A:  “Our coaching staff and I knew it was coming. It will be a great challenge for our athletes to take the next step up, competition-wise, after only four years of competing in 2A. But it is exciting in so many ways. We have built our schedule with several 3A & 4A teams already, but will begin tweaking our schedule (this spring) to reflect the move up.’’
