Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award.
The award recognizes the student-athlete’s dedication to strength and conditioning.
The NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year award program is in its 33rd year.
This year, the NSCA awarded 225 collegiately and high school athletes from 90 schools with the esteemed award.
Chapman, who has signed to run track and cross country at Indiana State University, was selected for the award by strength coach Janet Clifton, MS, LAT, ATC, CSCS.
“Sydney has overcome several serious medical conditions throughout her career, including a hip injury that had left her unable to regularly train throughout June to October 2011 for cross country.’’
Chapman cross-trains like the fierce competitor she is, always trying to find another way to maintain or increase her strength and conditioning without further aggravating her hip.
Clifton said that Chapman can perform five pull-ups and has personal records of 11:09 for 2 mile, 5:20 for 1,600 meters (where she placed in the top 10) in the 2011 state track meet), an 18.46 for 5 km.
“Her strength index lifts may seem unimpressive at face value, but for an athlete struggling with body issues throughout her career, it is amazing that she has the bodyweight she currently has and the cumulative strength, which is continually improving,’’ Clifton said.

Noblesville High School senior runner Helen Willman, the 2011 Hamilton County girls cross-country champion, has accepted a scholarship to attend Ohio State University in 2012.
She set a cross-country course record in the Noblesville Sectional, winning in 18:20 at Chinquapin Ridge 5000m in 2011.
Set the County record (18:22.9) in 2011, and the Noblesville High School record at 18:13 in the Brebeuf Regional.
She also set the Hoosier Crossroads Conference record in 18:23 her junior year.
In track and field, Willman placed third at 800 meters in 2010 state meet, and placed third in the 1,600 state meet in 2011, clocking in a school-record time of 4:55.8.
Lady Greyhounds Place 5th In Nike Nationals

Renee Wellman's 59th-place finish helped Carmel XC earn best national finish ever/HC Sports Daily file photo.
Members of the Carmel High School girls cross country team competed in the Nike Cross Nationals Championship in Portland, Ore., finishing fifth among 22 teams.
The team earned an opportunity to compete in this national championship by placing first in a Midwest Regional qualifier on Nov. 13.
Although the team qualified under the name “Code Red Carmel,” the organizers at Nike requested the name be altered to reflect the hometown the members of the team lived. Thus, the name was changed to Carmel XC Club for the nationals.
Carmel achieved a first for Indiana by being the highest finishing girls team in the history of the event (since 2004),” Carmel coach Mark Ellington said.
The Westfield girls have also participated in this event in the past (13th in 2005, seventh in 2006, and 15th in 2007).
Carmel XC Club finished seventh at the nationals in 2010.
Here are the Carmel XC Club finishers, with grade in parentheses:
59th - Renee Wellman (12) 18:53

“It was not a perfect race, and our team will probably sit down and talk about what they didn’t like about it and what they would have liked to fix, but we did come here for one purpose – to win a state championship,” Carmel coach Mark Ellington said. “To put five girls in the top 20, that’s an excellent team effort. We were ecstatic.”
Senior Sarah Bennett made a big charge at the end of the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) race to finish second individually in 18 minutes, 19.0 seconds. Warsaw’s Ashley Erba won in 18:05.6.
“It feels amazing,” Bennett said. “This year, we were so blessed with such a deep team, so knowing I was out there with six other girls who had my back the whole way made it a lot more secure to go out and take a risk and see what I could do.”
Sophomore Kelcy Welch finished fifth in 18:30.9. Sophomore Gina Genco took 13th in 18:46.5, and seniors Allie Jacobsen and Renee Wellman were 18th and 20th in 18:53.1 and 18:55.2.
Wellman won the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award.
“I’m very honored to win it,” Wellman said. “Cross country has just been an amazing experience, and I hope I helped make the sport better at Carmel High School. It is really nice to go out on top my senior year. We’ve worked so hard, and this is a very special group of girls.”
Lady Greyhounds Hope to State XC Case Again
Hopes are high as Carmel’s defending state-champion girls cross country team seeks its second straight championship on Saturday in Terre Haute.

Carmel coach Mark Ellington thinks his cross country team primed for repeat/HC Sports Daily photo: Mark Morrow.
Coach Mark Ellington’s Lady Greyhounds have been ever-so-dominant — when at full strength, and even when not at full strength — this season.
“We feel confident about our chances this weekend, and based on previous performances we believe we are the favorite to win on Saturday,’’ Carmel coach Mark Ellington said. “Of course, I can’t think of any athletic championship that is based solely on previous competitions or paper predictions. We still have to show up ready to compete for the title. We are certain that the 23 other teams racing on Saturday are not going to lie down and let us walk to victory.’’
The Carmel girls team has spent quite a bit of time not only training to be outstanding runners, but to be healthier, more complete athletes, according to Ellington.
“This has been accomplished through our work with St. Vincent’s Sports Performance toward strengthening legs, hips, lower back, and core muscles as well as our weekly workouts in the pool and cross training that girls have completed at various times throughout the season,’’ he said.
Semistate champion Renee Wellman is one of only a few girls that appears capable of winning the individual title for Carmel. Some other strong contenders should be Noblesville’s Helen Willman, Warsaw’s Ashley Erb, West Lafayette’s Bobbie Burgess and Terre Haute North’s Mackenzie Caldwell.
“Our own Sarah Bennett, Kelcy Welch and Gina Genco could also add to that mix. They have all been running with much success this season,’’ Ellington said. “Renee really had a breakthrough in the MIC Championships when she dipped below 18:00 for the first time in her career. I feel she has always had the physical tools to achieve this, but she has found a new mental level of competition now that she has been sub 18:00.
“Saturday’s race should be a great one for everyone involved. We are hopefully to return as state champions, and possibly set some record-setting achievements along the way.’’

The Lady Greyhounds tied the score at 1 with two minutes left in the first half, and Tori Doss scored the winner with 35 minutes remaining. It was her second goal of the game.
Carmel advances to the North Central Semistate, and will meet No. 3 Evansville Memorial in the 10 a.m. opener on on Oct. 22. The title game is set for 7 p.m.
HSE (18-0-2) competes in the Fort Wayne Semistate. The Lady Royals meet Leo (17-0-3) in the first game at 10 a.m. The winner will play again that night at 7 o’clock for the championship.
“Forward/Midfielder Tori Doss had a big game, scoring two goals, setting up teammates for shots and playing tenacious defense. Senior captain Brooke Backes also had an excellent game,” Carmel coach Frank Dixon said.
“I once coached a Greyhound team that earned the nickname ‘Cardiac Kids.’ While the name was not exactly original, that team earned it by winning many games late or coming back from a deficit to win. If this year’s team continues the current trend, they will soon earn the moniker ‘Cardiac Kids II.’
The Lady Greyhounds have now played five straight ranked teams.
