Records were made to be broken.
And Hamilton Southeastern’s Gary Harris is closing in on a big one, a major school milestone that has withstood the test of time for more than 40 years.

The 6-5 senior is only 36 points away from becoming the school’s all-time scoring leader.
The Michigan State recruit has 1,430 career points. Jack Roudebush, a 1970 graduate, scored 1,465 points.
The multi-talented Harris has scored 500 points so far this season and is averaging 25.0 points per game.
He also should lock up his second consecutive Hoosier Crossroads Conference scoring championship Friday night on Senior Night. The Royals entertain Lafayette Jeff and Rashad Richardson, who averages 24.3 points.
Prior to the tipoff: Harris will be honored by McDonald’s for being named as an All-American and participant in the 2012 McDonald’s All-American High School Game in Chicago, Ill., on March 28. He’s one of only two Hoosiers named to the prestigious game.
Also Noteworthy:
• Three Hamilton county boys basketball players rank among the top eight scorers in scoring. University High junior Jordan Pickett averages 26.0 points, followed by Harris and Sheridan junior Tyler Jones (22.9).
• Fishers’ 6-8 senior Tyler Alderman is averaging 3.8 blocked shots. That’s tops in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference.
• Southeastern also can add a school-record 14-game winning streak in Friday’s regular-season finale, and a victory would match last season’s record total of 20 wins. The Royals finished 20-4 a year ago.
Class 2A Bowman Academy No Soft Touch
Class 4A No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern plays host to 2A No. 4 Bowman Academy of Gary on Friday night.
Forget the difference in classes, this isn’t likely to be a breather for the Royals.
Two of the five Bowman Academy losses were 3-point decisions to former No. 1 North Central and highly regarded Cathedral, both 4A schools.

>>>Next Week: The regularly scheduled Carmel at HSE boys basketball game on Feb. 8 has been moved to Feb. 9 to accommodate the girls Sectional 8 games on Feb. 8 at Carmel<<< |
The Eagles (9-6) defeated Lawrence Central by eight points and lost to Warren Central in a tournament game. The other losses, including a forfeit, came against Illinois and Michigan teams.
The Eagles are coming off a 101-74 win over Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A.
Bowman ranks No. 8 overall in the Sagarin Power Ratings (for all classes), which gives you an idea the toughness of the 2A school’s 13th-ranked schedule. The Eagles are No. 1 in the Class 2A power ratings, while state-ranked No. 1 Park Tudor (13-2) is No. 2.
HSE, 14-2 and winner of nine straight games, is No. 1 in the ratings.
Two of the state’s premier athletes will be on center stage.
In addition to Southeastern’s 6-5 Gary Harris, a 23.7 scorer, Bowman’s Dejuan Marrero, a 6-5 senior, is also a big-time scorer and rebounder. Like Harris, he runs the floor well, plays at both ends of the court, and possesses tremendous athleticism.
Millers, Huskies Own Long Winning Streaks
Two long winning streaks will be on the line for a pair of Hamilton County boys basketball teams this weekend.
Class 4A combatants Noblesville (5-6) and Westfield (5-6) get together on Friday night at Westfield.

Noblesville owns a 14-game winning streak over Westfield, including two sectional victories. The sectional wins came in 1994-95 and 2009-10 seasons.
The Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivals have played a continuous regular-season schedule since the 1999-2000 season.
On Saturday, Class 3A Hamilton Heights goes to Class 2A Sheridan. Since the 1999-2000 season, the Huskies own an 11-game win streak against Sheridan.
No. 3 Greyhounds Gear Up For More Tests
The New Year promises to offer plenty of exciting basketball. Starting this weekend.
And for Carmel, the New Year should tell the Hounds a lot about themselves over the next five games, for sure.
Carmel (6-1), winner of five straight games, has gradually moved up in the rankings, and the Class 4A Greyhounds are ranked No. 3 in this week’s poll. They face a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference test right off the bat, when Center Grove (7-2) pays a

visit on Friday night.
On Saturday, the Greyhounds visit Westfield, which won last week’s Rush-Shelby Shootout, upping its record to 3-4 against a brutal schedule.
The Carmel boys already own a 53-50 decision over previous-No. 1 North Central, another MIC foe.
And then the next three games for coach Scott Heady’s Greyhounds should provide an even bigger measuring stick with dangerous teams on their plate. The Hounds visit previously-ranked Cathedral (Jan. 11) and Kokomo (Jan. 14), and return home to face No. 2 Pike (Jan. 18).
Whew! Not much time for the Hounds to catch a breath.
Life-Saving Efforts Recognized At Southeastern

Prior to last week’s Hamilton Southeastern-Zionsville boys basketball game, boys track and field/girls co-ed cross-country coach Joe Golden and HSE school nurses Beth Hanover and Sue Albano were recognized for their life-saving efforts for HSE senior Drew Robinson, who went into cardiac arrest on Nov. 15 at school.
Drew, a member of the varsity basketball team, went into cardiac arrest in Golden’s third-period class, and Joe, Beth and Sue performed CPR and used an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) to resuscitate Drew.
After Drew was stabilized and transported to the hospital, Fishers Emergency Medical Technicians made it clear that that the young man is alive because of how those three handled the situation.
The Southeastern Rebounders Club presented the three heroes with a framed, autographed team picture and the HSE Athletic Department gave them each a framed varsity letter.
CR Heroes restaurant (off East 96th Street in Fishers) also made them “Heroes of the Month” and have placed their picture on their “Heroes” wall, and restaurant owner Stephanie Boehm also provided $50 gift certificates to her restaurant.
The Robinsons and School Health Inc. have graciously donated back to HSE an additional AED and wall cabinet.
