2011 HS Football: Let The Games Begin!
The 2011 football season should again offer a lot of fireworks in Hamilton County, and possibly well into the postseason like Fishers did in 2010 en route to the Class 5A state championship, the first for the Tiger nation.

And, of course, the Tigers needed to defeat Carmel and Hamilton Southeastern for the first time to kick-start their run in the sectional and on to Lucas Oil Stadium.

They also ended the Metropolitan Interscholastic
Conference run of 10 straight big-school championships.
Fishers finished 14-1, the lone loss coming against town of Fishers rival Hamilton Southeastern.
The 2011 season, which gets under way on Friday, Aug. 19, certainly won’t lack for storylines.
Consider the possibilities:
>>>Hamilton Southeastern which has won or shared four consecutive Hoosier Crossroads Conference football titles, appear to be armed and ready for more success. Coach Scott May will unleash a prolific offense, possibly as good as you’ll see anywhere, with Jake Jones throwing to sure-handed Gary Harris, and Ryan Ripp and Jamitreus Crockham again leading a potent running attack. The Royals thought they were the best team in 2010. They might have been until it counted the most. New year. Many of the same faces. Can they strut their stuff this season . . . from the get-go?
2011 Volleyball: Lady Millers Ready to Play
Steve Ward thinks his volleyball program is headed in the right direction.

Coach Steve Ward thinks improved defense by the Lady Millers will make Noblesville a better team in his second season/HC Sports Daily photo/Mark Morrow..
The second-year Noblesville coach was greeted by some much bigger numbers in 2011.
“I think the word is getting out. The interest is growing,’’ Ward said. “It just takes a while in a new system.
“We actually had to cut eight players. You don’t like to have to cut players, but when you can only keep so many this shows we’re creating more interest.’’
Ward, who returns eight players from last season, said he purposely didn’t practice his Lady Millers much this summer, and it has paid a big dividend.
“We wanted the kids to be hungry and be fresh for when it was time to get down to business,’’ he said. “I wanted to find out who really wanted to play, and things worked out real well, I feel.
“We’re anxious. We think we’ll be better this season . . .especially defensively.’’
One of Ward’s top players among eight returning starters is Marissa Hine. “She’s a very good athlete,’’ he said.
Hine, who has committed to Belmont University, plays the Liberd/DS position for the Lady Millers.
2011 Soccer: It’s Time To Get Some Kicks
Welcome to the big time, Guerin Catholic.
Small-school Guerin Catholic will get a chance to compete with the big schools on an even bigger stage.

The only school in any class to do so, by the way.
Cocky? No. Confident? Well . . . yes.
And, why not?
Take into consideration that the Guerin Catholic program did quite well in the old single-class format the past three seasons.
The Golden Eagles won two straight regionals and reached the final four at state in 2010.
And, of course, they beat several Class 4A programs along the way.
2011 Cross Country: Plenty Of Talent
It should be an exceptional season for girls and boys cross country in Hamilton County in 2011, with season-opening contests getting the green light on Aug. 15.
Consider:
>>>Carmel’s Sarah Bennett and Renee Wellman ran third and eighth, respectively, last year for the state champion Lady Greyhounds.
>>>Noblesville placed eighth in the state, led by sensational distance runner Helen Willman (seventh at state), and the Lady Millers return everyone.
>>>Westfield’s Lady Shamrocks return three of its top four runners from a squad that placed 12th at state.
>>>The Hamilton Southeastern boys — like the girls coached by Joe Golden — are loaded with their top four runners from last year’s sixth-place state finals team.
>>>Carmel lost All-American Chris Walden to graduation, but a pack of strong Hounds return from last year’s ninth-place state team. Continue reading
2011 Tennis: Carmel Still The Team To Beat
There’s good news for schools not having to face Carmel in a boys tennis sectional this season.

Mark Woodmoe
One in particular is Hamilton Southeastern, unbeaten and ranked No. 2 behind Carmel before being shut out by the

Mike Bostic
Greyhounds 5-0 in the 2010 Carmel Sectional.
There’s also some bad news for Hamilton County schools and probably the entire state, according to Southeastern coach Mark Woldmoe. When asked about the team to beat, Woldmoe didn’t hesitate: “Carmel,’’ he said, matter of factly.
For good reason . . . Coach Mike Bostic’s defending state champion Greyhounds are loaded, again.
The Royals, the defending Hoosier Crossroads Conference champions who should again be a power, will host their own sectional when sectionals begin on Sept. 28, and would not face the Greyhounds unless both reached the state finals.
The winner of the Carmel Sectional, a field that also includes Westfield, University, Guerin Catholic, will go north for the regional in Kokomo. The winner in the HSE field, which includes Noblesville, Hamilton Heights and Fishers, which had been in the North Central Sectional, would move on to the regional at North Central.
