Softball: Lady Royals Deliver When It Counts

Taylor Shuey threw a green sweatshirt over her shoulders while trying to get — and stay — warm with her team at bat. The .455 hitter had two hits, including a two-run double to tie the score at 8-all in the sixth inning/HC Sports Daily photos: Mark Morrow.

Winning pitcher Amanda Wintrow tossed a 4-hitter and smacked a 3-run homer in HSE's 11-10 victory.
The Class 4A No. 3 Hamilton Southeastern softball team showed its true team mettle on Friday night.

First baseman Bailey Rager drove home the winning run.

Sidney Morgan cleaned up with both a bat (3 hits, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs) and a broom (working on the field) after the game. She said her performance was "probably'' her best.
The Lady Royals gutted out an eight-inning, 11-10 victory over Brownsburg, scoring three runs, capped by Bailey Rager’s two-out single over shortstop.
And they got the job done under less than favorable conditions while producing their 11th victory in 12 starts.
They survived cold, damp, dreary weather, where holding onto the ball in a steady drizzle was a challenge, to say the least. And they escaped despite giving up two runs on passed balls and two more on wild pitches.
It was as if they willed what at times seemed to be an unlikely victory.
It was so hard getting a solid grip on the ball that winning pitcher Amanda Wintrow had to wipe her pitching hand on a towel that was tucked inside the back of her waist band before nearly every pitch in the final three innings.
Wintrow, who came on in relief of freshman Maggie Armstrong, with HSE trailing 3-0 in the third, scattered 4 hits, struck out 7 and twice pitched herself out of jams, mostly because of issuing 6 walks.
“We could have given up, but we didn’t,’’ said coach David Cook, referring to the fact his team lost the lead twice after going up 6-4 in the fourth inning. “It was a great effort under some tough circumstances.’’
But in the end, the Lady Royals came away winners mainly because of the way they swing the bats.
