SECTIONAL TENNIS: Fishers Makes History!

The 17-1 Lady Tigers bring Fishers High School first sectional championship in girls tennis/Submitted photo.

The Fishers High School girls tennis team added another championship to the school trophy case on Saturday.

After winning their first Hoosier Crossroads Conference girls tennis championship last weekend, the Lady Tigers followed that up with a first-ever sectional title in girls tennis on the Noblesville courts.

Coach Don Roesler’s young and talented squad won the Noblesville Sectional, defeating the host Lady Millers 4-1.

“Noblesville gave us a tough match,’’ Roesler said. “They are well coached and they fight hard.’’

Noblesville’s lone win came at No. 2 singles, where Kelsey Sigman (1-0) defeated Benedicte Hejgaard (8-8), the senior foreign exchange student from Denmark, 6-2, 6-2.

Noblesville’s Emily Renner & Elizabeth Gale did give Caitlin Gardner (12-2)  & Jayne Henn (12-2) a tough time before losing in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

“My girls just seemed to dig down deep all year long and come out on top. We are very happy to have won the sectional but want more,’’ Roesler said.

All of the other starters are underclassmen. No. 3 singles Jessica Lorenz (14-2) and Gardner are freshmen. No. 1 singles Kailey Eaton (15-3), a 6-2, 6-1 winner in the sectional title match, is a junior, as are the other three in doubles.

The 17-1 Lady Tigers  advance to the North Central Regional on Tuesday. They meet Lawrence Central. The second match features the Mt. Vernon and North Central winners. The first-round winners meet for the regional title on Wednesday.

“The girls are keeping a working attitude during practice and during all matches.  If they stay focused they will be tough to beat,’’ said Roesler. “Our No. 1 doubles (Ellen Hornett and Olivia Ruthsatz, both 16-2) are  still in the running for a doubles crown as we prepare for LC on Tuesday.’’

The Results:

1s-Kailey Eaton (F) d. Jenna Gerhardt (N) 6-2, 6-1

2s-Kelsey Sigman (N) d. Benedicte Hejgaard (F) 6-2, 6-2

3s-Jessica Lorenz (F) d. Alyna Ging (N) 6-4, 6-0

Fishers Girls Net 1st Conference Championship

Hamilton County Sports Daily

She's No. 1: Hamilton Southeastern's Kristie Hsu wins No. 1 singles at Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet/HC Sports Daily photo: Andrew Duvall.

The first part of 2012 has been quite a  championship season for the Fishers High School girls tennis team.

The Lady Tigers went 9-0 against Hoosier Crossroads Opponents during the regular season, and they added the HCC tournament championship at Avon on Saturday.

            HCC TENNIS

No. 3 singles champ: Fishers freshman Jessica Lorenz provides valuable points with her victory.

Yet, latching onto the trophy wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for Fishers, which got past in-town rival Hamilton Southeastern in another hotly contested showdown 45-43.

The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Royals 3-2 in their regular-season match matchup for the annual Mudsock Trophy.

And it was an especially big and satisfying  day for coach Don Roesler’s Lady Tigers, since it was the first HCC girls tennis championship for the school.

Freshman Jessica  Lorenz’s victory at No. 3 singles proved  especially critical for the Lady Tigers after HSE’s Kristie Hsu and Kelly Iden won Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.

Fishers junior Kailey Eaton lost 3 matches this season, 2 coming against Hsu, a senior.

More points for Fishers came at No. 2 singles, where foreign exchange student Benedicte Heigaard reached the semifinals.

Also, the talented tandem of Fishers juniors Olivia Ruthsatz and Ellen Hornett won No. 1 doubles.

Next up for Fishers, 14-1 in head-to-head competition this season, losing only to No. 2 Carmel last week, is the Noblesville Sectional on March 18, where the Lady Tigers join Hamilton Heights and HCC foes Hamilton Southeastern and the host Lady Millers.

“I have been looking forward to this year for awhile. With returning coaches Dale and Christy Seipel I felt we had a strong team this year. With returning letterman Kailey, Olivia and Jayne, we had a strong base. I had seen Benedicte, our foreign exchange student, and Ellen, our transfer from Marion H.S.,  hit in the summer and knew they could contribute.
With freshman Caitlin (Gardner) and Jessica also making the varsity cut, I knew we had a chance to win the conference,” said Fishers coach Don Roesler.

“We went 9-0 in conference and really wanted to back it up at the conference tournament. Well we did, we won conference for the first time. We have been working hard and hope to win at sectionals, something no FHS tennis team has done yet.’’

Lady Greyhounds Win Battle Of Unbeatens

Carmel's Haley Wild and Aliana Finkelmeier were pretty relaxed after going up 3-0 in the second set of the No. 1 doubles match/HC Sports Daily photos: Mark Morrow.

“Beautiful weather . . . great day for tennis . . . it’s going to be fun,’’ Carmel coach Mike Bostic said before the start of Thursday’s highly hyped tennis match between two state-ranked unbeatens at Fishers.

Sophomore Bailey Padgett serves in the second set, which she won 6-0.

That it was — especially fun for No. 2 Carmel (11-0), which defeated No. 7 Fishers (14-1) by a somewhat surprising 5-0 score.

           HS TENNIS

The previous night, Carmel was a 4-1 winner over No. 11 Hamilton Southeastern, which recently  lost to Fishers.

If it was a measuring stick, then the Lady Tigers have a ways to go, starting with the weekend’s Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship, followed by the Noblesville Sectional on March 18.

The Lady Tigers figure to be favorites in the HCC meet. They went 9-0 in head-to-head conference matches this season.

There’s no question that Fishers was playing at a little higher level against a good, experienced team that returned four key starters, including No. 2 singles state champion Mikaela Carlson, now a senior, from last year’s state championship team. And Bailey Padgett  was the state runner-up at No. 1 singles.

Fishers' Kailey Eaton talks things over with coach Don Roesler after the junior, who owns a 13-2 record, went up 4-3 in the first set of No. 1 singles.

Going into the match, coach Don Roesler, whose team  has never beaten Carmel, said he thought they would need to win both doubles and No. 1 singles to pull it out. “Being in a sectional opposite Carmel, we couldn’t meet again until state, and they’d have to first beat Evansville Memorial,” he said. “If we get out of the sectional, we could have a good road ahead.”

Bostic said his girls were really motivated against Fishers, pointing out,  “We played one of our best overall matches of the year.’’

The Results:

1s-Bailey Padgett d. Kailey Eaton  6-4, 6-0

2s-Mikaela Carlson d. Benedicte Hejgaard  6-0, 6-1

3s-Molly Fletchall d. Jessica Lorenz  6-0, 6-2

1d -Alaina Finkelmeier/Haley Wild d. Ellen Hornett/Olivia Ruthsatz  6-2, 6-2

2d-Hannah Elliott/Michelle Li d.  Jayne Henn/Caitlin Gardner  6-0, 6-1

“Bailey fought through a tough first set and then she really played loose and starting hitting her shots.  Mikaela is just so mentally tough.  There is no replacing a player like her.

“Molly bounced back after a tough loss against HSE and really played well.  Both doubles teams really came out firing and kept the momentum going through the whole match.  The junior varsity team proved it is the best junior varsity team in the state today (14-0 win for a 11-0 record).  It is playoff time and I feel really good about where our team is and our chances.  It is time to do everything a little bit better and that is what we plan to do.”

Bailey Padgett, who survived a tough start to finally defeat Kailey Eaton 6-4, 6-0, said it’s all about team for the Lady Greyhounds as they gear up for the Carmel Sectional.

2d-Hannah Elliott/Michelle Li  d.  Madi Alton/Claire Runde  6-0, 6-1

JV Score:  Carmel 8-0

“We played really well tonight on senior night.  Bailey looked sharp and Hannah Van Soelen once again stepped up for the team.  The doubles team played with a lot more energy tonight.  Iden looked very impressive against Molly.  She didn’t miss much at all.  We go for the undefeated regular season tomorrow at Fishers.  We have got to be ready for the battle,” said Carmel coach Mike Bostic.

“The  Lady Royals suffered their second loss of the season.  The HSE ladies fought hard but the Greyhounds were just too tough,” said  HSE coach David Willingham. “They are really talented and deep, but I was excited to see our girls give it their all against one of the best teams in the state. Junior Kelli Iden was amazing in her effort at #2 singles;  she played one of her best matches of the season.”
