The Hamilton Southeastern Athletic Department has announced the resignation of Kathy Slyder as the girls varsity volleyball coach.
Coach Slyder has been the head coach at HSE for the past eight years. Prior to coming to Hamilton Southeastern, she was the head coach at Heritage Christian for 10 years.
Under her leadership. the Lady Royals:
■ Won the sectional in 2008 after a 16 year-drought.
■ In 2009, the Lady Royals clinched their first Hoosier Crossroads Conference title and went 34-2 on the year.
Coach Slyder was named HCC Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009.
“Being a head coach is very demanding; I understand and respect when a head coach says they want to spend more time with their family,” Athletic Director Jim Self said.
2011 VOLLEYBALL: HC Sports Daily Team Named
Westfield junior Alexis Mapes has been selected as Player of the Year, and Carmel’s Rich Coleman as Coach of the Year on the 2011 Hamilton County Sports Daily Volleyball Honor Team.

Player of Year: Westfield's Alexis Mapes ranked fourth in the state in assists with 1,116/HC Sports Daily photos: Mark Morrow.
“She (Alexis) runs the show . . . she’s the real deal,’’ Westfield coach Stacie Pagnards said prior to a recent game. “You’ll see.’’

Coach of Year: Carmel's Rich Coleman led team to 16-4 record in his first season.
Indeed.
Mapes ranked fourth among state leaders this season with 1,116 assists, and she was a major player in Westfield’s first sectional title since 2004 and the school’s first regional championship. She also helped the Rocks reach the championship game of the Huntington North Semistate.
Westfield, which upset No. 4 Carmel in the Hamilton Southeastern Sectional and finished the season 29-7, placed five players on the team.
Coleman, a first-year high school coach, has changed the face of volleyball at Carmel. He led the Greyhounds to a 16-4 record and what is believed to be the highest ranking ever for a Camel volleyball team. The Lady Hounds were well below .500 a year ago.
“The faces I saw in the locker room after our sectional loss told me the kids don’t like losing . . . they were very emotional,’’ said Coleman, who had been coaching Club Volleyball. “They came in with a great attitude this season and did what was asked of them. We were young (4 seniors) and the future is bright. I’m proud to be a Greyhound!’’
Hamilton County coaches were involved in this process.
The team members are listed under Honor Teams on the information bar at the top of the home page.
Westfield Celebrates Sectional Volleyball Title

LADY ROCKS: 2011 CLASS 4A SECTIONAL 8 CHAMPIONS!
Westfield High School finally got what it wanted — a Class 4A Sectional volleyball championship.
It’s the first in 4A for the school — the first sectional since 2002 (Class 3A) — and the first title for several of the three-year team members of the Lady Rocks.
That’s something coach Stacie Pagnard was looking forward to with great anticipation. Especially after Westfield started its quest by upending No. 4 Carmel in five last Thursday.

On Saturday morning, the Lady Rocks got past Zionsville in the semifinals, and then defeated the host Lady Royals 25-8, 25-16 and 25-9 Saturday night to capture Sectional 8 at Hamilton Southeastern on Saturday night.
Westfield (29-6) advances to the regional and will play the host Mavericks at McCutcheon at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
McCutcheon, like Westfield a Hoosier Crossroads Conference member, defeated Logansport 25-18, 22‐25, 25‐15 and 25‐9.
The regional champion will advance to Huntington North on Saturday.

The only ranked team in the Sectional 8 field and the defending champion were bounced out of the Class 4A tournament at Hamilton Southeastern on Thursday night.
Both Westfield and Zionsville won in five sets.

The Rocks defeated No. 4 Carmel 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-13, and 23-game winner Fishers faltered down the stretch and fell to the Eagles 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13.
Westfield, in particular, proved it’s going to be a tough out.
“They’re a good team . . . they should do well the rest of the way,’’ said first-year coach Rich Coleman, whose Lady Greyhounds bowed out with a 26-4 record. “They challenged our block more than what we’re used to. They were very aggressive up front.”

Motivation played a big role for Westfield (27-6).
“We knew they’d come at us hard. We beat them in five sets early this season and came from a 11-3 deficit in the final set,’’ Coleman said. “That’s a lot of motivation.’’
Westfield coach Staci Pagnard put it even more in perspective.
“We played them without two key players, and it was a tough loss. So, yes, we really wanted another shot at Carmel. It’s our biggest win,” she said. ” But our motivation was even more. We had something to prove. We haven’t won a sectional in Class 4A, and we knew the challenge was to get past Carmel to have a shot at one.
“We have many three-year starters who’ve never won a sectional. That’s left a bitter taste. Our girls responded well. They take care of each other. We took care of business, and there will be no letdown after beating Carmel. We’ll stay focused.’’
Lady Royals Avenge Loss Against Noblesville
Revenge was sweet for the Hamilton Southeastern volleyball team.
Coach Kathy Slyder said she could not have hand written a better draw in the sectional.

Nor is it likely she could have had a better script to produce a better finish.
It included a little bit of everything, including great support in front of energized fans at home in the opening round of Sectional 8 on Tuesday night.
Slyder said it simply couldn’t have gone any better, as her Lady Royals bested the Lady Millers in three by 26-24, 25-17 and 25-21.
“We lost to Noblesville really bad a few weeks ago, and we wanted to play them right off the bat,’’ Slyder said. “We were strong. We were in sync. We communicated well, and we felt like we took it to them this time.’’

Noblesville's Shelby Lackney (6) and Morgan Pavelka (10) go up for a block/HC Sports Daily photo: Jon Hartley.
Second-year Noblesville coach Steve Ward said his team was prepared, that he had a game plan in place. “We just didn’t execute,’’ he said. “We made 15 errors in the second game, and you can’t win playing like that.
“We played hard. I think we just had some internal pressure. We went into a panic mode and they (Royals) were in the right spots at the right time . . . and they simply made the plays.’’
It marked the fifth straight year that Noblesville has not won an opening sectional match.
“We’re not happy the way it ended again,’’ said Ward, whose team had a good season with a 21-8 record, “We lose four quality seniors, but we’ll be much more experienced next season because of playing many young players.’’

Noblesville’s Marissa Hine Simply Has Game
It’s not surprising that Noblesville’s Marissa Hine is such a good athlete. She gets it naturally.

Marissa Hine, a standout in volleyball and softball, is a natural talent/HC Sports Daily photo: Mark Morrow.
“It’s just one of those family things, I guess,’’ the senior said with a smile.
Her older sister, Morgan, played softball and volleyball for the Lady Millers. Her younger sister Madison plays for the National United Soccer team.

Marissa’s dad played football and baseball, and her mom played volleyball and ran track in high school.
Marissa Hine, who is a standout volleyball club and high school player, will play at the next level in 2012 at Belmont University.
What the senior already accomplished at Noblesville is short of amazing.
Not only is she a celebrated volleyball player (she plays Libero/DS), she also helped the softball team hold down the state’s No. 2 ranking most of her junior season. And, oh yes, she swung a pretty mean bat, hitting three home runs, en route to the Lady Millers’ Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship.
And she had not played competitive softball since junior high school.
“I had not played softball since eight grade. I had more time to pick up the sport again. I always liked softball but I usually had to make a tough decision because of club volleyball, which I didn’t play last spring,’’ she said.
“And to be quite honest, I think it just motivated me to give it a try since I come from such an athletic family.’’
HSE Girls Get Past Noblesville In Soccer, Again
Hamilton Southeastern defeated rival Noblesville 1-0 to successfully begin defense of its Hamilton Southeastern Sectional championship on Thursday night.

It marked the second straight win over No. 3 Noblesville for the No. 2 Lady Royals, who defeated the Lady Millers 2-0 last week to win the Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship outright.
“Wow, playing one of the best teams in the state back to back and to beat them back to back is a testimony to our players and how good they are,’’ coach Greg Davidson said.
ROUNDUP
HSE got on the board with 18 minutes left in the first half, when Hannah Miller got off an incredible shot that hit the post but was followed by little sister Jess Miller for the goal.
“Great composure for a freshman and a great first shot from Hannah to create the opportunity,’’ said Davidson. “We thought Hannah had a goal of her own in the second half but it just went wide.
Stacey DePreist came up huge on Noblesville’s biggest scoring threat, coming off her line and smothering the ball.
“Our Defense all over the field was great and our back line was not going to allow them a goal tonight. The crowd was amazing and we appreciate the support so much,’’ Davidson said.
Next up for the Lady Royals is the sectional championship game on Saturday night at 6 against Pendleton Heights.
